Xbox One is sold in what feels like a constantly expanding bundle market. In fact, don't buy the console if it doesn't come with at least one game. At any given time the odds are there's a bundle that includes a game that's right for you.

For the most part, the Kinect camera-microphone array has been eliminated from bundles, but you can still purchase the original tandem for around $400 or more. Alternately, you can buy the Kinect module separately (usually with a game included) for $150. That said, we really can't recommend Kinect for much of anything.

No matter when you decide to buy an Xbox One, odds are you'll find a compelling bundle or discounted special pricing.

Here are the areas where the Xbox One excels -- and where it occasionally has an edge over the PS4:

Media apps

The Xbox One has a slightly better lineup of streaming apps than any other current-generation console. It has roughly twice as many offerings as the PS4. Some notable wins here include Comedy Central, Fox and FX Now, MTV, Bravo Now, NBC, Starz, TED, USA Now, Verizon FiOS TV and Skype (Microsoft-owned) -- none of which are available on PlayStation 4 at the current time. Xbox One is also home to EA Access, a subscription early-access program that gives members a chance to play games a few days before they're released and provides access to a growing list of EA legacy games.

Typically, Apple’s S year upgrades aren’t too exciting, but this year, it’s really gone all out with the new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. The improvements aren’t plentiful, but they are meaningful, which is more important. The camera upgrade is perhaps the best of all, though the increase in processing power, RAM, and functionality in iOS 9 are all key differentiators.

Once you scope out all the new features, it really boils down to one question: Should you upgrade to the iPhone 6S Plus? As with any phone, it depends on which phone you have now, and how much you’re paying for it. Here are our first thoughts after a few hours of using the iPhone 6S Plus.

It looks the same, but that’s a good thing

The iPhone 6S Plus is just as big, bold, and bright as last year’s phablet. Its 5.5-inch screen sports the same number of pixels as last year’s iPhone with a 1,920 × 1,080-pixel resolution and a density of 401 pixels per inch. Although most of Apple’s Android competitors opt for Quad HD resolutions of 2,560 × 1,440 pixels these days, the iPhone 6S Plus still holds its own against the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus. Of course, Samsung’s displays are technically sharper, but you won’t notice the difference unless you’re a real screen snob.

The iPhone 6S Plus’ 1080p screen may sound like a throwback to 2014, but it should save you on battery life in comparison with Quad HD phones, and the iPhone needs all the help it can get in that department. 1080p is good enough for an S series iPhone, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Quad HD were in Apple’s future plans.

Touch ID is much faster and a lot less finicky on the iPhone 6S Plus. Although it’s probably only a fraction of a second speedier, the added quickness matters, especially when you use Apple Pay.

Thanks to 700 series aluminum, this year’s iPhone should be strong enough to survive your skinny jeans.

As far as build quality goes, the iPhone 6S Plus is actually made out of a new aluminum alloy. It’s supposedly stronger and more durable, which is particularly important on the iPhone 6S Plus, which suffered from the #bendgate scandal last year. Bend tests from Square Trade and others are forthcoming, but this year’s iPhone should be strong enough to survive your skinny jeans (thank God).

The final change in the iPhone’s visual appearance comes in the form of a new color option: rose gold. Depending on whom you ask, this color actually looks quite pink, but don’t worry fellas — It’s really just a warm tone of gold. If you preordered the rose gold version for a bit of flash, you’ll be well satisfied. Even so, we suspect women will be most interested in the new color option.

3D Touch adds meaningful depth to iOS 9

The coolest new iOS 9 feature was not available on the day the new operating system came out, because it simply doesn’t work on older iPhones. If you oohed and aahed during the press conference when Apple showed off 3D Touch, your time has come. 3D Touch is exclusively available on the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, and it really changes the way you navigate your iPhone. Of course, unless you’re an Apple Watch user who’s familiar with Force Touch, you probably won’t even realize it’s there until you accidentally long-press an app that you’re trying to delete.

WHAT IS THE IPAD PRO?

The iPad has been more successful than Apple could have hoped for.

Sure, the company was aware that its handsome slab of glass was going to be the perfect platform on which to bring folk closer to content – be that web browsing, watching videos or casual gaming. What it may not have foreseen, though, is the slew of third-party peripherals and apps that have been designed to extend its functionality beyond solely a "play thing" into a workhorse too.

Enter the iPad Pro, the daddy of all iPads thanks to an enormous 12.9-inch screen. More than two inches bigger than the iPad Air 2 – and five more than the iPad mini 4 – the iPad Pro provides around 80% more viewing area when compared to its 9.7-inch counterpart.

The iPad Pro is bigger than all iPads that have gone before it – although incredibly, this increase in size is delivered in a package that's only 33g heavier than the first version released back in 2010.

Every other feature of note receives a boost too. The screen has a higher resolution, there’s a brand-new A9X processor and 4GB of RAM. Apple claims the iPad Pro is faster than 80% of portable PCs shipped last year, and while I'd take that declaration with a pinch of salt, it may not be too far off the mark. The reason being that the vast majority of laptops sold tend to be cheap and cheerful – particularly with the advent of the Chromebook.

AS THE  PlayStation 4 quickly approaches its third birthday, let's reassess the current state of Sony's flagship game machine.

When the competing consoles were first released, we gave the edge to the PS4 over the Xbox One. And at this point in time, the PS4 is still looking good. It continues to improve thanks to regular system firmware updates and a consistent stream of console-exclusive independent games. Exclusive AAA-titles are less frequent, but the PS4 has some promising titles coming down the pike, including The Last Guardian and Horizon Zero Dawn, both scheduled to arrive in 2016. But if you're concentrating more on the exclusives 2015 has to offer, the Xbox One wins that immediate holiday battle.

The majority of games are available on both platforms and PC. We call these multiplatform games. In our testing, we've found that a handful of titles perform better on a PlayStation 4. The most recent example of this is Call of Duty: Black Ops III.

To be clear: The PS4 and the Xbox One are very closely matched. Both offer a growing library of third-party games -- mainstays like the Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed series, as well as newer titles like Fallout 4 and Rainbow Six Siege. And both double as full-service entertainment systems, with built-in Blu-ray players and streaming services like Netflix, YouTube and Hulu Plus.

WHAT IS THE IPHONE 5C?

The iPhone 5C is a cheaper alternative to the iPhone 5S and marks the first time that Apple has changed its mobile line-up. Traditionally, if you were looking for a cheaper iPhone you would have to step back in the series to an older handset, this time it has released two phones at once.

The iPhone is a notoriously expensive phone regardless of which version you buy, and the iPhone 5C has not broken the mould in this sense. At launch it commanded a price tag of £469, but its price has since been slashed to under £300/ $450. You can currently get your hands on the 8GB version from Best Buy for as little as $300. It actually costs roughly the same as the iPhone 5, a phone it shares a lot of its internals with.

the ultimate way to test a new phone? Travel with it. When you're seeing sights and losing yourself to the moment, there's no room to tolerate a poor camera or buggy software, slow speed or short battery life. If there's a flaw, you'll find it.

 

the Galaxy S7 is the best all-around phone out today. It's superior to the excellent Google Nexus 6P, Apple iPhone 6S, LG G5 and HTC 10. In fact, the only phone that surpasses it is its own fraternal twin, the larger, curvy-screen S7 Edge, which is technically my top pick -- but only if you're willing to splurge. Sure, there are some potentially worthy rivals out beyond the horizon -- the iPhone 7, the next Nexus model, and the Galaxy Note 6. But none of them will likely be on the market for months to come. So, for now, the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge remain the best phones money can buy.
